Half a pound of nostalgia at The Oldest Sweet Shop in England in Pateley Bridge

Whenever I go home to York, you can bank on the fact I’ll be advocating a long family drive deep into the Yorkshire Dales. This is, quite naturally, because the roadside sheep and blind bends are in my blood, but also because I’m hankering after a visit to my favourite shop in the country.

The Oldest Sweet Shop in England located in Pateley Bridge is, as you would expect, a haven of glass jars teaming with aniseed balls, ginger creams, cola pips, and Nuttall’s mintoes. I urge you to go; even TV chef Nigel Slater paid a visit a few months ago to rediscover the sweets of his childhood. Stepping through the low, wooden door – which dates back to 1661 – is a nostalgia fest like no other. Every detail from the weighing scales to the stunning original till is steeped in another era. I cannot resist buying half a pound of malt chocolate balls on each visit – truly divine and I promise you they are better than any Malteser you’ve ever tasted.
